For any computer network a balance must be struck between peformance, cost, and scalabilty.  Each user on the network will have their own unique set of requirements that dictate the necessary capability of their workstations, their access to peripheral hardware, the software required to perform the tasks, the need for mobility in and out of the workplace, and redundancy to ensure reliability on the network.   When users can be grouped into classes, then more computers can be configured identically providing potential costs savings and additional redundancy in the event of a catastrophic failure.
